Changing Habits

I hear many brides to be saying they want to lose a certain amount of weight before their big day and proceed down a dangerous diet journey. Which I have learnt over the last few years is not the best mindset to have. Although I try to focus more on self-acceptance and positive body image at any size, I do realise there are a lot of people who want to look and feel their best for their wedding day by losing some weight to look good on camera. Let me tell you, I’m always working on this myself. The difference in my mindset is I’m working towards commitment to healthy habits forever. So how does for life sound?!

I know this sounds scary. COMMITMENT!! FOREVER!!

But what if I told you there is a better way than going on a restrictive diet and intense exercise program. Because going down this way could either leave you binge eating, disappointment, self loath or you could reach your goal, but then what? Was that route you chose, realistic and sustainable for you?

Once you figure out that nutrition and fitness doesn’t have to be restricted or punishment and that in fact it will make you feel great and enhance your life.

Believe me when I say changing habits is not going to be easy. I have struggled with this for 10 years. But 3 years ago I decided to change the path I was on and commit to forever. Ive had my ups and downs. Even just more recently I felt myself turning to old habits. I found myself bingeing again and my confidence was low, I was obsessing about food again and even was thinking about joining with Jenny. When my husband made me realise everything I have learnt over the last few years, Jenny was not the answer. So instead of letting everything fall apart again, I decided to reach out to one of my local nutritionist (friend) for some help. Because what I’ve learnt along the way that motivation and supportive mentoring can be a game changer.

Focus on one habit at a time, make small changes here and there. Experiment with different exercise you enjoy. Don’t think of food that you can’t have and focus and what you should have and what makes you feel good. Find ways to make nutritious food taste delicious.

Keep your end goal healthy habits forever in mind and don’t let short term gains tempt you. You have one life on this earth and so many wonderful days as a married couple ahead. I would love for you to enjoy your life without being consumed by the diet restriction, fitness grind for the rest of your days.

You have to decide what you want more, bad habits that bring you instant gratification and comfort or new habits that will be uncomfortable and hard at first, but will make you glow from the inside out for the long haul.

Don’t know where/how to start? You don’t have to do it alone. Did you know that I am a certified nutrition and health coach. Don’t hesitate to reach out! I offer a Wedding Wellness Package. You can find more info here.

Or you could contact Lori from MTK Nutrition who has helped me. (I am going to write a blog all about working with Lori soon) You can find her here.

You are so worth it and you can do it!!

6 Tips To Feel Confidence On Your Wedding Day | Tasmanian Wedding Photographer

6 Tips To Feel Confidence On Your Wedding Day

Tasmanian Wedding Photographer

One of my biggest fears as a wedding photographer is my bride’s not liking their photos. Over the years when I’ve talked to brides about their wedding pictures, they say they hate them and the photographer gets the blame. Often it’s not the photographer’s fault and the pictures are in fact beautiful and represent the day perfectly. Now sometimes this is not the case, and that’s why choosing the right photographer is important. It’s the photographer job to help the bride and groom feel and look comfortable. If you don’t feel comfortable to start with, it betrays in the pictures. But that’s a whole other post.

What I really hear is brides are not happy with themselves and how they look. We are our own worst enemy. We are so critical and downright mean to ourselves. I know this because I do it too and hated my wedding pictures. I would just look at myself and pick out all the things I hated. I hadn’t lost the weight I wanted too, my boobs look funny, double chin… I went on and on. But now when I look at my wedding pictures I love them more and more. I’ve learned to look beyond how I looked. It’s really how I felt and what that day meant. I’ve also done a lot of self-love work over the past few years. That’s how I looked, that’s me, the body I had at that moment on my wedding day and it was a special day.

I want you to love your wedding pictures the moment you view your wedding gallery. You should feel good about yourself on the inside and out. Let’s take the pressure off yourself in the run up to your wedding day, with these motivational tips so you will look and feel confident the day you say your vows and beyond.

Love the camera

So there are a few things we can do to help and the first is having a couples session. Love story sessions are what I like to call them. These can work really well to remove the fear of being photographed on the day of your wedding and not only that we develop more of a friendship and get to meet in person. I really think this makes a huge difference, and that’s why these sessions are complimentary in my wedding package.

The way I approach my couple’s sessions is to give my couples a simple exercise to do, by doing this it focuses them on each other rather than the camera. I encourage my couples to enjoy each other’s company and it’s the in-between moment I’m looking for. You can find some sessions here.

Learn to be happy for who you are

If you hate all pictures of yourself and the reason for this is that you have a negative self-image, practice self-love. Believe in yourself! stop! doubting! You know it doesn’t matter which shape or size you are, just believe in yourself, you will look fabulous and feel fabulous. Recognise how truly lucky you are to have found the man of your dreams and he loves you for who you are all the lumps, bumps and wobbly bits.

Start every day by looking in the mirror and only say beautiful things. Having a couple’s session is a great time to practice only picking out what you love about yourself in the pictures.

Don’t go on a diet and stop weighing yourself

I hear so much talk about diets. But I don’t want you to go down that track. I want you to develop good eating habits, this is so valuable to your mental and physical health. You want to be full of energy, serenity, and happiness.

As a nutrition and health coach, I strongly believe diets are the enemy and they only leave you with more problems, guilt, low self-esteem, low energy, and binge eating. Instead of starting a new diet on Monday, think about ways you can include more veggies, cutting back on processed foods. Don’t focus on the things you shouldn’t eat, but more on the foods you should eat and like to eat. The more you think about how bad that doughnut is and you can’t have it, you will end up eating that doughnut and more.

As for scales, they will not tell you how beautiful, amazing and wonderful you are. They will never show you how loved you are by family, friends and future husband. NO, THEY WILL NOT! GET rid of them! Body confidence comes from within. Enjoy the lead up to your wedding and wedding day, you are awesome just how you are!

Improve your self-care routine

Finding time for self-care can be hard but so so important, by scheduling in a NONE negotiable you time is such a huge investment and never a waste of time. Start off small, like a body brush before jumping in the shower, while saying positive affirmations (like how amazing your legs are and you are excited to walk them down the aisle) maybe you start off with thinking of one gratitude before you go to bed. Or you make sure you have that big drink of water in the morning. Then when you’re ready you can move onto bigger things like a hike or yoga.

It’s like a domino effect, the more kind things you do for yourself the better you feel and the more you want to include self-care, and the next thing you know it's a daily habit and a way of life.

Find a dress that fits your amazing body

Tasmanian Wedding Photographer

It’s amazing what a well-fitting dress can do to boost your confidence. You want a dress which looks and feels amazing and that starts with buying one which fits you. Should your dress need taking in before the day, then you can find a seamstress to do that. Or find a seamstress that does custom designs. I in fact know the perfect person. Denise loves doing custom designs. You can find here.

Don’t put off buying your wedding dress until you have achieved your dream body. Yes, a wedding can be a great motivator but let’s face it bodies don’t change in a flash and as I spoke about earlier planning your perfect diet will probably stop your progress towards your weight loss goals. So start with choosing the right dress that fits you perfectly, one that makes you feel radiant in the skin you’re in.

Remember, we are replacing negative thoughts with positive ones. Measurements are only tools not a title of your worth.

Stand tall and breath

I know this might sound weird, but we forget to do these two things with intention. Standing tall can impact how we feel about ourselves. And don’t forget to breathe. Breathing in deeply helps to relax you, so a great thing to practice doing to help calm the wedding day nerves is to take deep breaths. Breath in, count to 5, hold for 2 and do this a few times. I love including essential oils while I do this too. I good one to start with would be Lavender, lavender is famous for it’s calming capabilities. It’s restorative and stable, this oil can help with anything from sleepless nights to irritability.

Positive body image | Launceston Wellness Photographer

launceston wellness photographer.jpg

I've been really inspired by a few people in the media lately. They’re spreading a message that I’m really passionate about. Something I’ve been working really hard on myself and that’s having a positive body image.

I woke up to this image in my instagram feed this morning and inspired me to write this post and share this picture. You find it here.

I’ve had this dream for awhile now, but have been struggling with how to deliver and go about it and as the years go by my idea keeps getting bigger and bigger, but it never goes away. What started off with wanting to take beautiful pictures of people that weren’t the standard glamour or boudoir pictures that you see  a lot of photographers doing. I didn’t want them to be about how you look. More about how you feel and to celebrate you as a person. How often do we actually stop to think how far we have come, we’re too busy searching for the next big thing. We don’t spend enough time acknowledging and celebrating where we actually are right now. Maybe you haven't hit that big goal or that big dream yet but I bet you've come a damn long way.

As I was editing this week I was listening to this documentary series on FMTV. I love watching, reading and listening to anything heath and wellness when ever I can. If you haven’t heard of FMTV you should go check it out. Its like Netflix but everything health and wellness. So anyway I was watching this new documentary series called TRANSCENDENCE an episode called The Art Of Fullfillment. They were talking about finding your purpose, not just the one that pays the bills, but one that gets you jumping out of bed and that often you will find this purpose in your life story. We need more people to be vulnerable and to share the not so perfect.

I’ve been sharing my story a little more here and there sharing my struggles with binge eating and body image and behind the scenes I’m trying to put together a wellness photography experience. One thats not just a photo session but one thats a journey of self discovery and developing a positive body image. So next time your husband, friend or sister or whoever it might be wants take your picture, you jump in there with pride and nothing but love for yourself.

Watching that series has given me a little nudge to let go of my fear. To stop letting it hold me back. I  want to be one of those people to inspire, even if its just one person to take along this journey with me. I want to help spread this movement of body positive instead of  the diet culture telling us something is wrong. Let’s take the preasure off ourselves and start loving our body at every shape and size. Because really it only brings nothing but unhappiness.

What’s stopping you from jumping in front of the camera and looking at yourself with love and compassion? Do you look at professional photo’s and wish you had the confidence to get your own done? Do you shy away every time you see a camera? Do you look in the mirror and only see hate and self loath? Do you keep putting things off till you lose 10kg?

It”s time to stop!

Stop waiting for the perfect moment. LIVE IN THE NOW!! It’s such a wonderful feeling when you decide to quiet the diet culture and start living. It’s not an easy journey but I promise you it leads to a more peaceful one.

I’m the one who always has the camera in hand and I have to ask my husband more often to take pictures of me, especially with my children. It’s hard and I still have some work to do. But I’m grateful to have this picture with me and my children on our holiday. When I look at pictures of myself for a moment I might be judgemental to myself, but then I try to pick out all the wonderful things and remind myself that I’m going to keep taking care of myself and I know that doesn’t guarantee I’ll end up in a small sized body.

Let me say this, you and your body are not the problem.  We live in a broken world that doesn’t want you to accept fat on your body.  A society who wants you striving for thinness, but thin isn’t what all of us are called to be. Instead of going to body shaming, I challenge you to unearth what else is bothering you or stressing you out that you are blaming your body for.

3 takeaways:

  1. You deserve to have an opinion of yourself that doesn’t involve your body size.

  2. Seeing a photo of yourself/reflection you don’t like is an opportunity to choose to be kind to yourself.

  3. Photos or mirrors should be viewed as tools of acceptance and an opportunity to practice kindness, not tools of change.

Start with statements like, "I am..." or "What I'm really proud of myself for is..."

We deserve to have a positive body image of ourselves.

Celebrate You | Launceston Wellness Photographer

Wellness photographer

I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not but Ive been out of touch with my photography on social media and my website for the past two years. It hasn’t been because I’ve fallen out of love with my craft but more because I needed to take a step back and focus on myself, mentally, physically and emotionally.

In the last two years I have undergone a personal journey to living a healthier, happier me. 10 years of yo-yo dieting lead me down the path to a binge eating disorder, which followed with some pretty low self esteem, self loth and social anxiety. It was very easy to hide behind my photography business and I used it as an excuse that I didn’t have time to exercise or look after myself as I was making photography my first priority. I was at the bottom of my to do list.

When I hit my rock bottom I was a blubbering messy. (You can find my confession post here) I had a heart to heart with myself and I knew I just couldn’t keep continuing like this. I needed to create an ever lasting lifestyle change. And so the new obsession emerged a journey to the healthstyle. To create a life free from food battles, bad habits, mindset and limiting beliefs. I have realise the true importance of self-confidence, self-care, mindful eating and self-love, this is what finally got me doing the food freedom dance. My weight dropped, my business was restructured, and I was beginning to find me. Two years later, my love for health and wellness continued to increase and I decided to enrol at Cadence Health and become a certified nutrition and health coach.

I needed to take a break from social media to help me heal. So I’m hoping I can come back with more intention and I hope it’s ok to start sharing my journey with you on a more personal level. How I was able to come back refreshed, focused and confident. Tips on how to balance all areas of life and encouragement to celebrate YOU.

As a person we are for ever evolving in so many areas of our lives. If you’ve followed my photography journey from the beginning you would have seen me try every genre of photography there is and it’s still happening. No matter how hard I tried to fit myself into a box, I just couldn’t help myself but to explore. To tell you the truth I nearly quit photography, because I loved the feeling of putting myself first and I was feeling the best I’ve felt in a really long time. To not have to put myself out there, worry about what I was going to post next. I felt free. But recently I’ve been in a huge shift and the universe was telling me to hang on and not give up on my passion. I’m definitely coming back with a new focus yet again, it’s not  something I’m forcing, Im just going with the flow. Mixing my love for photography and wellness together. Lets celebrate you.
